The Sheffield Antimagnetic Alarm, produced circa the late 1940s to early 1950s, is a fascinating example of post-war Swiss mechanical watchmaking. Its most distinctive feature is the fully mechanical alarm complication, combining everyday practicality with an unusually inventive movement construction.
The watch is powered by the manually wound Baumgartner Frères BFG 90, a rare 17-jewel alarm caliber fitted with two separate mainspring barrels: one supplying power to the timekeeping mechanism and the other operating the alarm. Two small coloured apertures on the dial indicate the winding status of the respective springs. The alarm time is selected using the red arrow-shaped indicator, while the external control positioned on the side of the case activates or deactivates the alarm.
The silver-toned dial retains an attractive period appearance, featuring applied Arabic numerals, luminous hour markers, syringe-style hands and a central seconds hand. The inscriptions “Antimagnetic,” “Alarm” and “17 Jewels” clearly communicate the practical and technical character for which these watches were designed.
The case combines a chrome-plated base-metal body with a stainless-steel resonator back. Marked “TRIVERA” and “Fond Acier Inoxydable,” the perforated outer back was specifically designed to amplify and release the sound produced by the mechanical alarm hammer. The inner cover is signed “Sheffield Merchandise Inc. – Swiss Made,” confirming the watch’s Swiss manufacture for the Sheffield brand and the American market.
Sheffield operated as a private-label watch brand, offering Swiss-made timepieces primarily to international, and especially American, customers. Although it was not positioned alongside the major Swiss luxury manufacturers, this model is particularly interesting due to the mechanical complexity and uncommon architecture of the BFG 90 caliber.
With its twin-barrel movement, winding indicators, rotating alarm-setting system and resonating case back, this Sheffield is considerably more distinctive than a conventional mid-century wristwatch. It represents an unusual and increasingly collectible chapter in the history of mechanical alarm watches.
