This exquisite Longines wristwatch, estimated to date from circa 1949, is a particularly expressive example of late Art Deco design created for the American market.
Its rectangular 10K gold-filled case features the distinctive collector-described “Piping Case” construction. Sculptural, tubular lugs surround the strap and complement the case’s stepped, architectural profile, giving the watch a far stronger wrist presence than its compact dimensions might suggest. The inner caseback is marked “Cased and Timed in USA by Longines,” confirming that the watch was prepared specifically for American distribution.
One of its most remarkable features is the unusually thick, high-domed rectangular acrylic crystal. Strongly arched across its width and finished with faceted edges, the crystal rises prominently above the case, creating attractive optical distortions when viewed from an angle and reinforcing the sculptural character of the design.
Beneath it is an elegant silver-toned dial with applied stylized Arabic numerals, an outer railroad minute track and a square subsidiary-seconds register at 6 o’clock. These geometric details form a coherent Art Deco composition and harmonize beautifully with the elaborate construction of the case.
The watch is powered by the manually wound Longines Caliber 10L, a 17-jewel manufacture movement valued for its robust construction, reliability and precise engineering. Together, the distinctive “Piping Case,” highly profiled acrylic crystal and refined in-house movement make this an unusual and highly characterful example of Longines’ American-market production.
