De Breitling Chronograph Reference 178 is een toonbeeld van de vroege lijn van handmatig opwindbare chronografen met twee subwijzerplaten van het merk, met een ontwerp uit het mobilisatietijdperk dat kenmerkend is voor de productie rond 1945. Dit vintage uurwerk heeft de originele verzilverde wijzerplaat met meerdere schalen, Arabische cijfers en wijzers in de vorm van een injectiespuit. De uitgesproken ouderdomsvlekken en verkleuring van de wijzerplaat geven karakter aan de authentieke patina, terwijl de leesbaarheid behouden blijft. De klassieke indeling met 12 en 6 subwijzerplaten, met een 45-minuten teller op 12 uur en een secondenwijzer op 6 uur, sluit aan bij de correcte architectuur van het Venus 170 uurwerk.
De stalen kast van 35 mm, de bandaanzet van 42 mm, de rechthoekige chronograafknoppen en de gesigneerde Breitling-kroon weerspiegelen de compacte esthetiek van de Breitling-chronografen uit het midden van de jaren 40. Het acrylglas is authentiek voor die periode en het horloge wordt gecompleteerd door een bruine kalfslederen band. Dit exemplaar vertegenwoordigt Breitlings chronograafstijl van vóór de Navitimer en belichaamt de sportieve chronografen van het merk, gekenmerkt door compacte kasten, wijzerplaten met meerdere schalen en handmatig opwindbare kolomwieluurwerken.
