This compact, early-1960s IWC automatic date dress watch in Staybrite stainless steel showcases a classic mid-century case profile and a clean applied-marker dial. The design features a "pie pan" or stepped style, recognized by collectors for its subtly stepped perimeter, dotted minute track, faceted applied baton indices, and a date window at 3. While the dial has been professionally restored by a dial specialist using period-correct techniques, originality-focused collectors may value it differently compared to an untouched dial. The watch houses the caliber 8531, a part of IWC's 85x automatic family, known for its 21-jewel movement operating at 19,800 vph with the Pellaton winding system. The movement is marked "C. 8531" and "PAT. APPL." with visible serial stamping. The inner caseback is marked Staybrite Steel and International Watch Co., consistent with IWC standards, while the exterior back is plain and polished. The fish-emblem crown, typical of IWC's water-resistant case/crown sets from the era, is present. At 33mm, this watch fits the true vintage dress size, with drilled lug holes for practical strap changes. Although recently serviced, it's advisable to confirm basic function checks due to the robust nature of the Pellaton system, which benefits from proper lubrication and part inspection.
