This Eberhard & Co. Pre-Extra Fort Chronograph is a highly interesting and collectible vintage piece, most likely dating to the 1940s.
What makes this watch especially noteworthy is its unusual chronograph control system. The upper pusher is used for the chronograph operation, while the lower side control features a sliding function. Once the chronograph is running, this lower slider allows the central chronograph seconds hand to be temporarily stopped and then restarted without resetting to zero. This is a rare and very appealing feature from a collector’s perspective, reflecting the practical, instrument-like nature of early chronograph design.
The dial is equally attractive and distinctive. It features a multiscale layout, with a black outer scale and a blue scale marked in kilometres (KM). The black scale appears to be a tachymeter-style scale, used for calculating speed over a measured distance, while the blue scale is consistent with a telemeter scale, traditionally used for measuring distance based on the speed of sound. Together, these scales gave the watch a strong technical and sporting character, and make it especially evocative of the golden era of motorsport and professional timing instruments.
With its balanced two-register layout, elegant applied numerals, steel case and warm vintage character, this Eberhard offers much more than simple timekeeping. It is a rare collector’s chronograph with an unusual operating system, a visually striking dial and strong historical appeal. Historical Context
Eberhard & Co was founded in 1887 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. In 1935 the company
introduced an oversized chronograph that collectors now call the Pre-Extra-Fort. These watches
used the Valjoux 65 as a base movement but incorporated Eberhard’s own modifications: the
start/stop/reset functions were consolidated into one pusher at 2 o’clock, and a sliding lever at
4 o’clock locked the pusher. Cases were large for the time (around 38–40 mm) and often
featured stepped bezels. The dials commonly displayed concentric telemeter and tachymeter
scales, sometimes with pulsometer or snail designs. The Pre-Extra-Fort was produced until the
early 1940s and later evolved into the Extra-Fort line of three-register chronographs.

This watch was last serviced on 04-05-2026.
